The Help

During the last few lessons of this semester we'll be watching the film The Help.
The story is set in Mississippi during the 1960s , and the main character of the film is Skeeter, a southern society girl who returns from college determined to be a writer. She decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families, and in the process of doing so Skeeter turns her friend's lives - and the Mississippi town - upside down.

Before watching, discuss what you know about America in the 1960s. In what ways were the lives of the white people and the black people different?
After having watched the film we will discuss the following questions, so it could be a god idea to take some notes while watching:

1. Who was your favourite character? Why?
2. How much of a person’s character would you say is shaped by the times in which they live?
3. Do you believe that Minny was justified in her distrust of white people?
4. Do you think that had Aibileen stayed working for Miss Elizabeth, that Mae Mobley would have grown up to be racist like her mother? Do you think racism is inherent, or taught?
5. Do you think there are still vestiges of racism in relationships where people of color work for people who are white?
6. What did you think about Minny’s pie for Miss Hilly? Would you have gone as far as Minny did for revenge?

Exploring English - Language and Culture

The on-line course Exploring English - language and culture begins on the 22nd of February. That is the Monday of your holidays. I would strongly recommend you to begin the course then, even though your off school. It's possible to catch up once back in school, but it will require you to work extra at home.
If you have already signed up (which most of you have), you will get an email with information on how to proceed once the course has begun. If you haven't signed up, do so as soon as possible by clicking on the link below!

Week 6 - Class 9B

On Monday I won't be present, but Henrietta will stand in and be your teacher for the day. We'll skip the grammar exercises, but instead you'll spend more time on your book talks. Each group will get 15 minutes to prepare a summary of what you've read so far. This summary will then be presented to Henrietta who will take notes of your participation, as well as of how well she was able to understand the summary. Will waiting for Henrietta to get around to your group, you spend the time either reading your book or writing on your essay. This is also what you'll do for the rest of the class after Henrietta has listened to your summary.

On Tuesday you'll begin class by doing an adjective exercise on Grammarwise and then continue reading or writing. If you haven't yet signed up for the on-line course, Exploring English - language and culture, youäll get time to that that during this lesson.

Be aware that this week will be the last week during which you will get time in class to read and write. After the holidays all lessons for the following 6 weeks will be dedicated to the on-line course. This means that you will have to do the rest of your reading and writing at home. The first draft of your essay is to be handed in Tuesday week 9.

Deadline for your completed essay is on Thursday the 24th of March.

Describe the antagonist(s) in the book. Try and explain their actions, their reasoning and their path through life.

Is the novel similar to/does the novel remind you of a book you have previously read or a film you have seen. If so, in what way?

Snart går årets The Big Challenge av stapeln.

Book review

In this post you'll find the instructions for your forthcoming book review. It is very important that you answer all the questions! Also, if you are aiming for the higher grades, make sure to answer the star marked questions as well.

When you are writing, revise your text at times to make sure everything makes sense and is correctly written. You might want to change words or phrases to improve the text. Once you are finished writing, proof read your text before you hand it in. You might also want to ask a friend to proo f read your text. Instructions for revision and proof reading can be found below. Use the checklist!

Do- omskrivning och pågående form

Genitiv

Time to continue our grammar lessons by swiftly moving on to the genitive.
But wait! What now? Doesn't that voice sound familiar?

Lesson plan

On request, here comes the lesson plan för the next two months.

Countable and uncountable nouns / articles

Novels

After Christmas we'll begin reading this years novels. On your first day back in school you'll get to choose the book you'll read, but I would like for you to already take a look at the novels that's on offer, and think about which one you'll pick.
There is a limited amount of copies of each book, so you might have to think about a second option as well!
Click on the links below to read a review on each book.

What we have learned about Ireland

During the past few weeks you have worked with preparing a presentation on Ireland. We've now listened to interesting facts about The great famine, Giant's Causeway, Irish food and hurling, among other things.
We had a look at the Padlet you made as an introduction to working with Ireland, and it was clear that it was pretty much unknown territory... From the padlet made in todays class we can see that you now know a little bit more, and hopefully the presentations have made you interested in finding out more!

If Dublin was a man I would marry him

15 years ago the Irish author Peter Sheridan published his book 44. A Dublin memoir. When released in Sweden, the title was Om Dublin var en kvinna skulle jag gifta mig med henne. I borrow that Swedish title, translated it back to English, and at once I had a sentence that very much sums up my feelings towards the capital city of Ireland,

I'm very excited to hear your upcoming presentations about Ireland, and I'm hoping that you, by gathering information and listening to each other, will appreciate the country for the magical place that it is.
